Workplace Insights

Good Day Beloved Ones!

Let's continue our thoughts on ambition. What is it and are you in touch with your own ambitions in life? There are so many driving forces in our lives and when we are not aware of them they simply drives us more. What is important is to understand whether our ambitions are moving us to good places in our lives or are we leaving people lying in the wake of our prescence? Are we getting somewhere and finding when we arrive we are empty and have no one to share our achievements with?

The questions to consider are :
. How do you define ambition?
. Can you identify the areas where you feel driven to succeed?
. Are you competitive or cooperative? (honesty please)
Where you see yourself in your workplace in relationship to other's positions? Are you comfortable there?

Well, make it a valuable day! Blessings!
Rev. Sylvia

  1. Good day,

I define ambition as a trait that creates movement; not necessarily just something one has, but more so a quality to possess. (It can be reflected in one's being). Be it movement of thought, idea, emotions, feelings, understanding, ambition, for me; ultimately lead to a physical movement - space, time. It's a deeper sense, a desire to move beyond something, perhaps someone; an event, circumstance or even just a moment in time. Ambition is the fuel, the spark that strikes the match or begins the process forward.

  2. As for where I see myself at work, I am as noted around the organization as the 'go-to-guy'. I am the policy/regulation 'police'. I am the 'how-to' guy on what's the best process/method/approach or way out with regards to Contract administration, contract policy and analyzing procurement actions. And I am also known as the 'heavy'. If something is off track, not working within the guidelines, or just simply incorrect, I have to catch it, work with the interested parties and get it back on track. As for the comfort level, there are some interesting challenges. For the most part, all levels within the organization appreciate and definitely support my role. There are those from the 'old school' of thought that have the notion, "we've always done it this way, why change and add rules now." My response, "that's why, because there were rules, you simply didn't know to understand them, or used 'shortcuts' creating catostrophic situations". So that can create challenges; not in the rules but changing cultures, thought-processes that are entrenched in the old.

  3. I definitely have a competitive nature when it comes to playing board games, cards, trivia, etc. But I am not competitive on the bigger ticket items, or at work, or when it comes to material goods.

At work, I am a person people like to bounce things off of, get my opinion. I think folks think I can figure things out, and look at situaitons objectively. I think I do too, and I think part of it is that I see work as work, so sharing what I know may give you that extra edge you need to get chosen to manage a project instead of me, and inside I would be fine with that. I see some people at work really putting in A LOT of effort and time, and I applaud them for that, but I am not that driven at work. I do a good job, I am liked, respected, I get a long with a good group of people, and I am not threathening or unapproachable. With that though, I am not the person going the 2-3 extra miles, and getting stressed. I think I have a good balance - but I wouldn't necessarily call it ambitious- but it works fine for me.

  4. I see ambition as the desire to challenge one's self to grow. Currently, the area where I am most driven to succeed is my Spirituality. I have made great strides over the past 2 years and feel so blessed!
I do have a competitive streak, but I don't let it drive me. I often strive for uniqueness in my work which alleviates most of my competitiveness.
At the workplace, I have noticed that coworkers are requesting to work with me instead of others. I am newer, so perhaps I have a different outlook or a more pleasant demeanor. I have been called "professional" and "cool-headed" in frantic times and I'm comfortable with that (just as long as I'm not doing ALL the work!).
